The iPhone has come a long way since the first generation, original iPhone. The iPhone 4S, the fifth generation of iPhones was launched on the 4th of October 2011 and is due for release across the UK on the 14th of October 2011 with the best iPhone 4S contracts. Below is some consideration of the difference between the first generation and fifth generation iPhones and show just how far the ubiquitous smartphone has come since its launch in June 2007 to the launch of the iPhone 4S.

The original iPhone used cutting edge quad band GSM with GPRS and EDGE technology in order to provide faster access to the internet than had precedence in the mobile phone arena and is was able to see off its competitors.

This technology was able to give the iPhone (or the iPhone original as it was retrospectively called to differentiate it from its successors and the iPhone brand as a separate giant) an internet access speed of around 150 to 200 kilobytes per second was about as good as it got. Compare this with an internet connection speed of the iPhone 4S of around 1522 kbps. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that internet speed in ten times faster than the original iPhone. Good progress from the smartphone market in four years, and irrespective of the current patent issues, the iPhone has led the way in innovation in connectivity.

The original iPhone contained the Samsung 32-bit RISC ARM processor with a specified speed of 620 MHZ; but ran at 412 MHz. The iPhone 4S contains the A5, which is the same processing unit used by the iPad 2, giving it an immediate kudos within the smartphone market. This beast of a processing unit is able to provide a processing speed parallel to that of the iPad. There was a time when dual core processors were the remit of desktops then laptops, now Apple has brought this to its new iPhone model.

The original iPhone gave us the option to keep an active log of all our telephone communications; iCloud now provides a completely integrated solution to all forms of known communication, rest assured as well as being up to date with Jeff’s Twitter, Facebook and blogging feed, you will no doubt soon also be able to keep in touch with Jeff using the carrier pigeon application.

Voice control was not part of the functionality of the original iPhone, but voice control has been transcended by the Siri application, which is new to the iPhone 4S bringing a truly intelligent voice recognition software to the iPhone and is marketed as a personal assistant. Just dictate your plans into the Siri assistant e.g., “remind me next Wednesday about the birthday party with Steve Jobs” and it will provide you with a forward plan and reminder using information held in your contacts, text messages, website and social media applications; it may not, however, bring you a cup of coffee this is the new millennia after all.

The iPhone 4S has finally brought the iPhone camera functionality into the new millennia with an 8 mega pixel camera, compared with a 2 mega pixel camera in 2007 and the iPhone brand not having a flash until 2010. The iPhone 4S also comes with a flash and a customised with a larger f/2.4 aperture lens.

The iPhone, irrespective of any patent issues pending, really has been a leading light in the innovation of the smartphone; the iPhone 4 was good, the iPhone 4S is great.
